My inspiration comes from the beauty of everyday moments:
Whether that’s a cup of tea in the garden whilst listening to birdsong or walking along the river with my dogs. My studio is in the garden and the patterns I draw are influenced by the garden flowers, such as our climbing rose and holly trees. During dog walks in the countryside, I find all kinds of leaves and flowers to press into clay.
I hand-build items including plates, bowls, mugs and egg trays using terracotta and stoneware clay. I also make ceramic jewellery and ornaments. Many of my creations are slab built, though I also coil build and make pinch pots.
My Process
I enjoy drawing patterns and translating them onto clay,
with a focus on linear and floral motifs, pressing botanicals into clay and using hand-stamped lettering and sgraffito as decorative methods.
The therapeutic, ritual-like process of hand-building gives me immense joy, with each stage of ceramics feeling meaningful.
I find clay incredibly grounding.
As well as literally coming from the ground, clay combines touch, movement, pressure, and three-dimensional form; the sensory experience engages us on a different level. Using plants (that also- of course- come from the ground) creates a lovely full-circle element throughout what I create.
